Hair loss, which is a problem especially observed in men, is known as hair loss in various regions due to certain factors. Hair transplantation, which is applied to these areas with a very natural and permanent method, aims to achieve a healthy hair appearance.

What is Hair Transplantation?

It is the process of transferring one’s own hair to areas with hair loss in a natural and permanent way. When it is done by the expert and experienced technical teams by paying attention to the necessary hygienic conditions, a healthy hair appearance can be created as if the individual’s hair had never been shed before.

For people with hair loss, it is the process of transplanting one’s own hair to the areas with the shedding area, as natural and permanent as possible.

Who Should Receive a Hair Transplant?

Hair transplantation is considered to be the most common aesthetic practice for men. However, it can also be done to women who have hair loss or thinning problems, and not only hair, but also on eyebrows, mustaches and beards can be transplanted. Hair transplantation can be done not only for baldness, but also to increase hair density in sparse areas.

Why Does Hair Fall Out?

The most common cause of hair loss in men is a genetic predisposition. In this predisposition, which is also called androgenetic type hair loss, hair starts to fall out between the ages of 15-18 and reaches the final point around the age of 30. Genetic type hair loss in women is milder and may present at later ages. Apart from this, hair loss can be seen in advanced ages, after various injuries and some diseases.

How is Hair Transplant Done?

The most important factor in hair transplantation is that the person has enough hair follicles suitable for transplantation. These extracted hair follicles are called grafts. Grafts are usually obtained from the neck. If there are not enough hair follicles on the neck, grafts can be taken from the hairy areas on the chest and arm and sowing can be done. The procedure duration varies according to the size of the area to be transplanted. If the area is small, a single session of a few hours is sufficient, while if the area is large, the number of sessions may increase.

The most important point in hair transplantation is that the transplanted hair quickly starts to bleed and begins to feed itself after it is placed. This actually means ‘hair retention’. In order for hair transplantation to be successful, it is essential to retain as many grafts as possible and to give it a natural appearance. This is only possible by transplanting the graft at the right angle, at the right density and at the right distance by experienced hands.

What are Hair Transplantation Techniques?

Two main techniques are used in hair transplantation: Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).

The use of the FUT method has gradually decreased due to scarring and stitching, currently the most widely used method is FUE.

In the FUE method, the hair is extracted one by one under local anesthesia and transplanted to the missing areas. In this technique, no incision is made on the scalp while the grafts are extracted, the grafts are extracted with needles smaller than 1 mm. Grafts are placed at the correct angle and depth in the holes incised with the help of the micromotor device in the receiving area. Afterwards, it is covered with a bandage and the patient is discharged within an hour or two. A few days of home rest and bandage application are recommended. Between the third and fifth days, the patient is called for a medical dressing. Pain, discomfort, some bruising and swelling can be observed after the procedure, which can be subdued with painkillers. Intense, strenuous activities should be avoided for at least 2 weeks and the scalp should be protected from injury.

Is Hair Transplantation a Risky Procedure?

Like every medical operation, hair transplantation has some risks. Complications are very rare in transplantation procedures performed in experienced hands and under the supervision of specialist physicians. Depending on the degree of baldness, hair transplantation may require one or more repetitions within 1-2 years. Unwanted infections that manifest themselves in the form of severe heat increase and pain, scars known as swollen keloids at the skin level or raised from the skin can occur, albeit very rarely. In areas where the hair is removed and transplanted, numbness and loss of sensation may be observed, which can last up to 3 months.
